When Printer Firmware Is Required
Firmware installation may be required if a printer or MFP stops accepting a cartridge, blocks printing after refilling, displays a consumable error, or requires a cartridge to be replaced even though it can still be used. The cause may be software-based consumable control, the installed firmware version, or an error following a previous update.
Another situation occurs when the device stops operating normally after an unsuccessful firmware installation or update. In this case, simply installing the software again is not sufficient; the device must be diagnosed and its operation restored.
Firmware is not suitable for every type of fault. If the problem is related to the cartridge itself, the chip, contacts, or the mechanical part of the printer, changing the firmware will not eliminate the cause. Therefore, the nature of the fault and the possibility of resolving it through a software-based solution are determined before the work begins.
Chipless Firmware for Printers and MFPs
For some models, firmware is available that changes the device's standard cartridge-chip monitoring behavior. Where this option is supported by the specific device, it allows a refillable cartridge to continue being used without regularly replacing the chip.
The availability of chipless firmware depends on the model and the installed software version. Even within the same printer series, the method may differ depending on the modification and current firmware. Therefore, the exact model and device condition must be determined before firmware installation.
Chipless firmware is also not the same as a standard firmware update. An official update installs the manufacturer's software, while specialized firmware may be used to change how certain device functions operate. This is particularly important for HP because, on models with Dynamic Security, firmware updates may affect cartridges containing non-original or modified chips.
Chip Resoldering and Printer Unlocking
If a software solution is insufficient for a particular model or a hardware-based method is used, the chip in the printer or MFP may be resoldered. Unlike firmware installation, this procedure directly involves the electronic part of the device and is used only where an appropriate technical solution is available.
Depending on the model, the issue may be resolved in another way: by resetting a software counter, restoring the firmware, or changing how consumable monitoring operates. Therefore, "unlocking" is not a separate universal procedure — the cause of the lockout is determined first, after which the appropriate method is selected.
Firmware Recovery After a Failure
If a printer stops starting after an unsuccessful firmware installation, an interrupted update, or installation of an unsuitable file, the software component must be recovered. Reinstalling the firmware without diagnostics in such a situation may make the problem worse.
First, the device condition and the possibility of normal access to the software are determined. If the machine fails to boot or is not detected by a computer, the formatter and related components are additionally checked. Depending on the model, recovery may be performed through software or may require work on the electronic components.
This is why it is important to report what happened immediately before the failure. If an attempt was already made to install the firmware independently, this can significantly affect further diagnostics.
Counter Reset and Error Resolution
For some models, print errors are related to a service counter reaching its limit. After refilling the cartridge , replacing the drum, or performing maintenance, the device may continue to display its previous status until the corresponding value is reset.
Depending on the device design, the required service reset is performed, including resets for the toner, drum, maintenance, or absorber counters. A counter reset does not replace physical maintenance. If a component has actually reached the end of its service life or the absorber is full, a software reset alone is not sufficient.
Therefore, the cause of the error is determined first, and only then is the appropriate procedure performed. This prevents the displayed message from being removed while the underlying technical problem remains unresolved.
Printer Firmware Update and Configuration
In addition to specialized firmware, a standard firmware update is performed when it is genuinely required for a particular device. Before updating, the current software version is identified and the compatibility of the proposed file with the device model is checked. Manufacturers also recommend checking the installed version before updating; Xerox, for example, explicitly states that the current software version should be determined before installing a new one.
After firmware installation or recovery, the device is tested and configured if necessary. Printing, connection to a computer or network, and correct software operation are checked.
If the problem is related to the computer connection rather than the firmware, driver configuration or an update may be required. In such a case, firmware installation is not necessary.
HP, Samsung and Xerox Printer Firmware
Work is performed with HP, Samsung, and Xerox printers and MFPs. However, the feasibility of a particular firmware procedure depends not only on the brand, but also on the exact model, firmware version, and condition of the device.
For HP, the current software version is particularly important because of the consumable-control mechanisms used in some models. For Samsung, the firmware version is available through the device's standard management tools, while Xerox also provides for checking the current software version before an update.
Therefore, to determine whether firmware installation is possible, it is sufficient to provide the exact device model. If the device has already been updated or an error occurred after firmware installation, this should be reported immediately.
