When a Plotter Requires Repair

Plotter faults may manifest as errors, interrupted printing, media feed problems, or deteriorating print quality. The cause may be related to faults in the printing system, disrupted ink or media delivery, wear of mechanical assemblies, or problems with the carriage and service station.

Repair is required if the equipment fails to pick up media, feeds it at an angle, jams the media, shifts the image, operates with unusual noise, or stops printing with an error. Streaks, missing colors, uneven fills, image distortion, and other defects also require diagnostics.

Which Plotters and Wide-Format Systems Are Serviced

Services are provided for technical and signage plotters, wide-format inkjet printers, as well as technical wide-format systems for printing, copying, and scanning technical documentation.

Equipment in A3, A2, A1, A0, and wider formats is serviced. The feasibility of repair and the specific scope of work are determined by the model, equipment design, printing technology, and nature of the fault.

Print defects may be caused by clogged nozzles, contamination or wear of the printhead, disrupted ink delivery, and other faults in the printing system. Depending on the cause, nozzles are cleaned and flushed, the ink supply system is serviced, and the printhead is restored.

If restoration is not possible, the printhead is replaced. Before replacement, the ink supply system is checked because a fault in that system may cause the problem to recur.

After repair or replacement of the printhead, alignment and print calibration may be required to restore accurate positioning and image quality.

For selected models, cartridges, ink reservoirs, and other printing system components can also be replaced. Compatibility is determined by the exact equipment model.

Carriage and Carriage Movement Mechanism Repair

A carriage fault can cause printing to stop, positioning errors, image displacement, jerky movement, and unusual noise. The carriage drive, belt, guides, position sensors, encoder system, and other mechanism components are checked.

If components are worn or damaged, they are replaced, followed by a check of the printing system's movement and positioning. For equipment where the carriage is connected to the ink supply system, the relevant connections and supply components are additionally checked.

Media Feed and Transport System Repair

Problems with feeding paper, film, and other materials may result from worn rollers, a contaminated mechanism, incorrect pressure, or faults in the drive or sensors. This can cause skewing, jams, uneven media transport, and image displacement.

The media feed mechanism is diagnosed and repaired, with worn components replaced as necessary. For roll-fed equipment, the winding system, tensioning mechanism, and other elements responsible for stable media transport are additionally checked.

Ink Supply System and CISS Repair

Disrupted ink delivery may be caused by air in the ink lines, clogged channels, damaged tubing, or faults in pumps, valves, and other components. Such problems may cause missing areas, missing colors, uneven density, and printing interruptions.

Depending on the cause, the system is flushed, air is removed from the ink lines, channels are cleaned, and ink delivery is restored. For equipment with CISS, the entire system or individual components, including reservoirs and ink lines, can be replaced.

Service Station Repair

The service station parks, cleans, and services the printhead. Contamination or wear of its components may cause parking errors, ink leaks, insufficient printhead cleaning, and deterioration of print quality.

Depending on the design, the service station components are cleaned, serviced, or replaced. After repair, the parking and cleaning mechanisms are checked, as well as the interaction between the station and the printhead.

Technical and Wide-Format System Repair

Technical wide-format devices differ from conventional inkjet plotters in their design and purpose. Depending on the model, the equipment may combine printing, copying, and scanning of technical documentation, while a fault may be related to the media path, imaging system, or scanning assembly.

Media feed and transport mechanisms, imaging systems, scanning and copying assemblies, and other components provided for by the equipment design are repaired. For applicable models, toner bottles, cartridges, and other consumable components can be replaced.

The feasibility of repairing a specific assembly is determined based on the equipment model and diagnostic results.

Equipment Calibration and Setup

After repairing the printing system, replacing the printhead, media feed components, or other components, equipment calibration may be required.

Depending on the model, printhead alignment, media feed calibration, positioning, and color registration are adjusted. For color systems, color reproduction can additionally be calibrated and a spectrophotometer can be used if the equipment design supports it.

Calibration may also be required after work on the feed, transport, or imaging mechanisms because changes in the position or characteristics of the assemblies can affect print accuracy.

Repair costs depend on the equipment model, nature of the fault, condition of the assemblies, and required components. After diagnostics, the scope of work and the possibility of restoring the faulty component are determined.

The cost of replacing the printhead, carriage, feed mechanism components, ink supply system, service station, and other components is calculated based on the specific model. If a part can be restored, the feasibility of repair is assessed before replacement.
